Quick answer: Progressive retinal atrophy is a group of inherited diseases in which the light-sensing cells of the retina die off, rods first, then cones. The first sign is night blindness, often in a middle-aged dog: hesitating at the door after dark, bumping into furniture in dim rooms, eyes that shine because the pupils stay wide. Day vision follows over one to two years. It is painless, there is no cure, DNA tests identify carriers in most affected breeds, and secondary cataracts are common. What PRA is

The retina has two kinds of photoreceptor: rods for dim light and movement, cones for daylight and detail. Cones follow, the retina thins, its blood vessels narrow, and the reflective layer behind it (the tapetum) shows through more brightly, which is the eerie shine owners notice in photos. Breeds and genes

Progressive rod-cone degeneration (prcd-PRA) is the most widespread form and affects Poodles of all sizes, Labrador Retrievers, Cocker Spaniels, Portuguese Water Dogs, Australian Cattle Dogs, Chinese Cresteds and more. Golden Retrievers have their own mutations (GR-PRA1 and GR-PRA2). Dachshunds and English Springer Spaniels carry cord1. Irish Setters carry an early-onset form (rcd1) that blinds puppies within the first year; Collies carry rcd2. Miniature Schnauzers, Siberian Huskies (an X-linked form), Tibetan Terriers, Papillons, Samoyeds and Norwegian Elkhounds all have identified variants. Mixed-breed dogs inherit whichever their parents carried. Most forms are recessive: a dog needs two copies to be affected, and carriers see normally.

Diagnosis

  1. Ophthalmology exam: thinning retina, attenuated vessels, hyper-reflective tapetum.
  2. Electroretinogram (ERG): measures the retina's electrical response to light; reduced rod response confirms early PRA before the retina looks abnormal.
  3. DNA test: a cheek swab identifies known mutations, screens breeding dogs, and tells you whether a puppy is clear, a carrier or affected. Results also matter if a cataract develops later, because surgery is pointless behind a non-functioning retina.

Secondary cataracts

A degenerating retina releases oxidative by-products that damage the lens, so many PRA dogs develop cataracts. The cataract does not need removing for vision, since the retina behind it is failing, but a mature cataract can leak protein and cause lens-induced uveitis and glaucoma. Living with PRA
