Quick answer: No, hemp seed oil and CBD are not the same. Both come from Cannabis sativa, and that is about all they share. Hemp seed oil is pressed from the seed: omega-6 and omega-3 fats, vitamin E and essentially zero cannabinoids, an ordinary food oil. CBD is extracted from the flower and leaf: cannabidiol, sometimes trace THC, early evidence for anxiety, better evidence for arthritis pain and patchy regulation. Is hemp seed oil the same as CBD oil?
The hemp plant stores its cannabinoids in resin glands on the flowers and upper leaves. The seeds have none, beyond trace contamination from contact with the plant.
- Press the seeds and you get a green, nutty oil that is roughly 55 percent linoleic acid (omega-6), 20 percent alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3) and a few percent gamma-linolenic acid, with vitamin E.
- Extract the flowers with solvent or CO2 and you get a cannabinoid-rich oil in which CBD dominates and THC is legally capped at a trace level (0.3 percent in the United States) but not always absent.

Does CBD work for dog anxiety? What the evidence says
Cannabidiol acts on receptors involved in pain, inflammation and stress. The best canine evidence is for osteoarthritis: several controlled trials report better comfort and activity scores at around 2 mg per kilogram twice daily.

Is CBD safe for dogs?
Pure CBD is well tolerated at studied doses. Raised liver enzymes are the main lab finding, and drowsiness or loose stools are the usual first signs of too much. Quality is the real problem: independent testing of over-the-counter pet CBD products has repeatedly found potency that does not match the label and, in some, THC above trace levels.
THC is genuinely toxic to dogs. Signs are wobbliness, dribbling urine, a slow heart rate and, at high doses, collapse. CBD also changes how the liver processes some drugs, including anti-seizure medicines, NSAIDs and sedatives.
Is CBD legal for dogs?
Hemp seed oil is a food. CBD sits in a grey zone: legal to sell as a supplement in many places, unapproved by drug regulators for animals, and in some countries and US states vets are restricted from recommending or even discussing it. That is why a chew sold as calming with hemp is nearly always hemp seed, and why a brand that wants to sell CBD has to say CBD on the label.

- "Hemp seed oil" or "hemp seed powder": a nutritional ingredient. Look at the other actives to see what does the calming.
- "CBD", "cannabidiol" or a CBD amount in mg: a CBD product. Ask for the batch test.
- "Hemp extract" with no CBD amount: ask the brand what it contains before you buy.
